Our Town
Hoedspruit is one of the main gateways to
the Kruger National Park.
It's an ideal base for a 1 day loop, going into Kruger at Orpen gate, and coming out at the Phalaborwa gate. And then, of course, there are some world famous private game reserves around Kruger Park, like Klaserie, Timbavati, Thornybush and Balule - some of which are just a short drive from Hoedspruit town.
Today the town is predominate a holiday town and only 15 yrs ago it was a result of Drakensig air force base. However more and more people are relocating to Hoedspruit to retire or live. This is due to the stunning scenery, and wildlife, Good weather and extremely low crime levels.
The climate in Hoedspruit is warm all year round with 600mm rain per annum and sunshine around 320 days per year. Average temperatures in summer are around 31 degrees Celsius, and about 26 degrees in winter, making for nice warm days almost year round. Apart from all the usual tourist activities (hot air ballooning, game drives, elephant back safaris, lion walks and the like), Hoedspruit also has a lot to offer to people who actually live here. There's the Drakensig golf course, which is part of the military base. It is run as a not-for-profit organisation, meaning that a round of golf is really cheap (as are the refreshments at the 19th hole).
There's a little airstrip right in the middle of town, which even has a flight school. So learn to fly in Hoedspruit as you will be able to fly over all the many game farms, private reserves, wildlife estates and see the bush from above. There are several great private schools in town, the Southern Cross Schools and Christian school being two of them , which has a nature based curriculum, and has a really good reputation.The Model C schools such as Drakensig and Mariepskop and also well run and still very popular, offering a high standard of education.
There are many excellent restaurants in Hoedspruit because this is tourism town with high quality food and selection. Favourites are Sleepers, Hat & Creek, The Gap Brewhouse, Kali Mambo (authentic Indian food) and Indian owner, Cala la Pasta run by Italian owners among others. A little way from town you get Upperdeck in Kampersrus, Anne’s Cotton Club, Three Bridges, Blyde Wildlife Estate Restaurant and Jos Macs.
Other activities of interest are Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre for Wildlife, the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, Jessica Hippo, the silk farm at 24 Degrees South, and the Blyde Canyon. The Blyde River Canyon is the third largest Canyon in the world, and the world’s largest “green” canyon. A trip to the Blyde Dam will be rewarded with mountain scenery, abundance of fauna and flora, waterfalls, and hiking trails.
Camping and picnicking are possible and for the more energetic, White river rafting and Kloofing.
Shopaholics will love the Kamogelo Shopping Centre, with its wooden walkways and quaint thatch roofs. There are a variety of Curio shops and art shops. There is also the Wild Fig Centre which also have food and clothing shops. Hoedspruit is the perfect location for a safari and a great location to explore the area. There are many game farms, game reserves, and lodges to stay at in the area. No matter what your interests, you won't get bored in Hoedspruit.
Many people have bought property and moved to the area since it offers such a great lifestyle. The people are friendly, there is a sense of community, crime is extremely low and traffic is almost unheard of. Hoedspruit does not even have a traffic light.
